Garadia Mahadev View Point: Discover Rajasthan’s Hidden Gem Near Kota
By Pawan Sharma
What if, instead of Rajasthan’s usual forts, palaces and desert landscapes, you could stand on the edge of a dramatic gorge and watch the Chambal River make a giant horseshoe-shaped bend hundreds of feet below you?
That is Garadia Mahadev View Point near Kota, Rajasthan.
Perched above the Chambal gorge, with a small Shiva temple nearby, Garadia Mahadev combines a spectacular natural landscape, spirituality, wildlife, silence and a little adventure. Rajasthan Tourism itself highlights the panoramic view of the Chambal River, gorge and surrounding plains as the main attraction.
The First View Is the Real Thrill
The experience begins before you even reach the temple.
After leaving the main highway, the road becomes quieter and more isolated. Garadia Mahadev View Point and the temple are located within the landscape of the Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve (MHTR), adding another layer of wilderness to the journey. As you approach the viewpoint, the landscape suddenly opens up—and below the cliffs, the Chambal River curves through the rocky gorge.
The river, green landscape and massive cliffs create a view that feels surprisingly different from the Rajasthan most travellers imagine.
This is why Garadia Mahadev is sometimes popularly described as “Kota's Grand Canyon.” It is not an official geological name, but the comparison comes from the dramatic gorge and sweeping river view.
And then there is the silence.
Instead of city traffic, you may hear wind, birds and occasionally the calls of peacocks from the surrounding landscape.
Why Is Garadia Mahadev So Special?
There are several reasons travellers come here:
The Chambal River Bend - The river makes a dramatic U-shaped/horseshoe-like turn through the gorge.
The Cliff View - You are looking down into a deep natural landscape rather than simply looking across a river.
The Shiva Temple - A small Garadia Mahadev shrine sits near the viewpoint. Rajasthan Tourism notes that the shrine is reached by descending steps from the viewpoint.
Wildlife & Birds - The surrounding protected landscape supports birds and wildlife. The broader Mukundra landscape is known for species including deer, wild boar, panther and many birds.
Photography - The combination of cliffs, river, wilderness and changing light makes this one of the more unusual photography locations around Kota.
Garadia Mahadev Temple: A Small Shrine with a Huge View
Don't expect a massive temple complex here.
To reach the small Shiva shrine, you have to descend through a narrow flight of steps carved between rough, uneven rocks. On the right side of the steps, the Chambal gorge drops steeply below, making the descent feel like part of the adventure itself. It is best to remove your shoes before starting the steps.
The temple sits beneath a rocky overhang, where a small Shiva Lingam is worshipped by visitors. Just beside the shrine, water flows continuously through the rocks from a gaumukh, creating a small natural waterfall. Visitors collect this water to offer to the Shiva Lingam, while some also bathe beneath the waterfall.
Where Is Garadia Mahadev View Point & How to Reach?
Garadia Mahadev is located near Kota in southeastern Rajasthan, on the Kota–Dabi–Udaipur road corridor, roughly 30–35 km from Kota city. Rajasthan Tourism places it near NH-76 towards Dabi and Chittorgarh, within the Mukundra Hills landscape.
The easiest way to reach Garadia Mahadev is by private car or taxi. From Kota, drive towards the Dabi/Chittorgarh side and follow the signs for Garadia Mahadev. After crossing the toll, you need to cross the hanging bridge and take entry through the Mukundra Hills gate. From there, continue towards the Garadia Mahadev viewpoint.
The final approach can be rough and uneven in places, so don't expect a completely developed tourist road all the way to the viewpoint. Local auto/rickshaw or hired vehicles may also be arranged from Kota, but because the destination is relatively isolated, a private vehicle or taxi is more convenient. Public buses can take you towards the highway, but the final stretch can be inconvenient and may involve walking. For first-time visitors, a taxi or private vehicle is the simpler option.
How Does Entry Work?
Garadia Mahadev falls within the Mukundra Hills protected landscape, so visitors need to pay the applicable entry fee at the forest check point before reaching the viewpoint.
The counter charges may vary for Indian visitors, foreign visitors, students (concession), cars/other vehicles and two-wheelers. Check the current applicable rates at the counter before entry.
You can also book the entry ticket online through the Rajasthan Forest Department's official FMDSS portal, or collect it directly from the entry counter.
When Is the Best Time to Visit?

Rajasthan Tourism specifically highlights Garadia Mahadev as a place to visit during the monsoon.
After the rains, the surrounding landscape can become much greener and small seasonal waterfalls may appear around the rocky terrain.
But there is a trade-off: wet rocks and rough roads can make the visit more difficult.
