Dev Diwali literally means “Diwali of the Gods.” According to Hindu belief, the gods visit Varanasi on Kartik Purnima. The festival is also associated with Lord Shiva's victory over Tripurasura. To honour the occasion, devotees light countless diyas, or traditional oil lamps. And this is where the real magic begins.

As evening arrives, the famous ghats of Varanasi begin to glow with thousands of diyas. Their warm light spreads across the riverfront, while the Ganges reflects countless flickering flames. From the shore, the sight is beautiful. From a boat on the Ganges, it can be breathtaking.

When Should You Reach Varanasi?
For Dev Diwali, it is better to reach Varanasi at least one day early, on 23 November 2026. This gives you time to check in, settle down and avoid the last-minute rush.
On 24 November, try to reach the ghat area by around 3:00–4:00 PM. Roads near the ghats can become crowded and traffic restrictions may be introduced as the evening celebration approaches.
When Should You Reach the Ghats?
Don't wait until sunset to reach the riverfront. Arriving by 3:00–4:00 PM gives you enough time to walk through the area, find a good viewing spot and experience the atmosphere before the ghats become extremely crowded. The diyas are generally lit around sunset, followed by evening prayers and other celebrations.
Want to Watch the Fireworks?
If fireworks are part of the official programme in 2026, they are expected to take place later in the evening, after the main lighting ceremonies. For the best overall view of the illuminated ghats and fireworks, a boat on the Ganges can offer a spectacular perspective. Since boat rides can fill up quickly, booking in advance is recommended.
When Should You Book Your Hotel?
Dev Diwali attracts a very large number of visitors, so don't wait until the last few days to book your stay. For a better choice of hotels and locations, try to book at least 1–2 months in advance, especially if you want to stay close to the ghats. It is also wise to book your boat ride in advance, rather than trying to arrange one on the festival evening.
Important Things to Keep in Mind
Dev Diwali means huge crowds, long walking distances, traffic diversions and security checks. Wear comfortable footwear, keep your valuables secure and carry only what you really need to the ghats. Keep some water with you and follow local instructions around crowded and religious areas. Most importantly, check the official Varanasi traffic and event arrangements before 24 November, as access rules and timings can change for crowd management.
